The new school term has started, which may be a relief for many parents but perhaps not so much so for the kids! While the youngsters’ biggest concern is having the perfect backpack, coolest pencil case and the trendiest shoes, for the adults there is far more to think about.
Regardless of whether you have lived in Marbella for a while or are new to the area, choosing the right school is a very important decision. One of the main worries that families have when moving to the Costa del Sol is that their children might lose touch with their home culture.
In the cosmopolitan town of Marbella this needn’t be the case, as there is a wide range of schools to choose from, suitable for a variety of nationalities from English and German to Swedish, Norwegian and French, all of which offer lessons in their native language as well as Spanish. The British School in Marbella follows the English national curriculum, which helps to prepare students for their GCSEs, while Laude San Pedro offers a bilingual education, allowing children to study in both English and Spanish, and interact with kids from a range of different countries and cultures. Other international schools in the area include Swans International School, The English International College and Colegio Alborán in Marbella, and Aloha College in Nueva Andalucía, Colegio Bilingüe in Las Chapas and Colegio Atalaya in Estepona.
If you would prefer your child to be taught within the Spanish education system, Marbella offers many state schools that are free of charge, as well as a number of private options to suit all budgets, such as Colegio San José, which has been voted the best school in Malaga and Andalucía for science, languages and music for a number of years. Not only will being taught in Spanish help your child to become bilingual and be immersed in Spanish culture, it will also encourage you as a parent to brush up on your own language skills so that you can help with homework and attend parents’ evenings and events.
When looking for a property on the Costa del Sol it’s important to take your child’s education into consideration and to think about factors such as: how long is the drive to school from your new property in Marbella, whether there is a school bus service and what after-school and sports activities are available.
We have put together a list of top schools in the area to help you with your property search in Marbella:
