Marbella: Frontline Golf City

Louise Swan, December 2015 | Local News and Information

Marbella has long been hailed as one of Europe’s top holiday resort destinations, tempting visitors from all over the world to its sunny shores, gourmet restaurants, sizzling nightlife and designer boutiques. But these days, its lush green fairways are enticing just as many people to the area.

There are so many fantastic golf clubs and championship courses to choose from in Marbella, including those located within Nueva Andalucía’s Golf Valley: Las Brisas, Los Naranjos, Aloha, Dama de Noche and La Quinta are all first class golf courses with much to offer regular players and visitors to Marbella. While each course has its own unique characteristics to draw players to its greens, the clubhouses are equally tempting, often with fine dining restaurants and spa facilities, such as Aloha Golf Club with its pool, gym, massage centre, pilates studio and saunas.

Further east, the Greenlife Golf clubhouse in Elviria Hills is home to the extraordinary Michelin starred El Lago Restaurant. As its name suggests, it is adjacent to a beautiful lake that forms part of the 9-hole course, ensuring diners enjoy stunning views across the course as well as superb food and wine.

The famous Marbella Club Hotel is centrally located on Marbella’s Golden Mile but has its own Marbella Club Golf Resort approximately 20 minutes drive away. Serviced by a regular shuttle bus from the hotel itself, the Marbella Club Golf Resort is very exclusive, open to hotel residents, members and invited guests only. The views from the course are phenomenal – on a clear day you can admire the coast of Africa as well as Gibraltar, the Mediterranean Sea and the stunning mountains that shelter Marbella.

All the best courses have well stocked pro shops selling golf equipment, fashion and accessories. Aiming to help visitors improve their game, several clubs run academies with individual lessons as well as group sessions available. The La Quinta Golf Academy is well known for its training facilities, which include a video room to help players really analyse their gameplay. With special courses for children and advanced players, La Quinta Golf is leading the way in golf education.

Not sure which course to choose? Look out for details of the various societies running regular tournaments on different courses enabling players to experience more than just one location, often at preferential pricing. Golf is more than just a sport in Marbella, it’s a true social experience and a great way to make new friends.
